Important information about baby products

  • Because children's bodies are growing and developing, they are more vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals. Even small amounts of a chemical can impact a child's ability to reach his or her full potential. Children are exposed to toxic chemicals from many sources in addition to toys, and the combination of these many exposures may cause harm.

  • In the last fifty years, more than 75,000 chemicals have been developed and introduced into commerce in this country. A large majority of these chemicals have not been fully tested for their ability to cause health and environmental effects.

  • The impact of these compounds on the environment and on the long-term health of our children is still being uncovered.  While human exposure to synthetic chemicals in the environment is on the rise, the overall incidence of childhood cancer also increased 10.5 percent between 1973 and 1994, with childhood cancers of the brain and other sites in the central nervous system rising 35.1 percent in the same time period.

  • Childhood asthma has increased dramatically in the last fifteen years. Though much remains to be learned about the causes of childhood cancer and asthma, environmental factors are suspected of being at play. Simultaneous to the reported rising incidence of some childhood diseases, evidence of additional health effects is emerging. A substantial body of scientific research demonstrates that synthetic chemicals can disrupt the hormone function in humans and animals.

  • The European Union has prohibited phthalates (often used to soften PVC) in toys since 1999, and recently expanded their ban to include all childcare products that might be placed in the mouth by young children.

  • Phthalates are also banned in many other countries, including Japan. The European Union also banned certain phthalates from cosmetic products in 2003 due to their reproductive toxicity.

  • PBDEs have been in production since the 1970s and have been used heavily in the manufacture of furniture, textiles, and electronics.   PBDEs are persistent toxic chemicals that build up in people and wildlife and contaminate breastmilk and umbilical cord blood.

  • DecaBDE, the most widely used form of PBDE, is classified as a "possible human carcinogen" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (ATSDR 2004).
